one is the loneliest number.

“We picture the world as thick with conquering

and elate humanity, but here,

with the bugles of the tempest pealing,

it was hard to imagine a peopled earth.”

[excerpt from The Blue Hotel by Stephen Crane]

.

.

this line (from a book i just read for a class assignment)

is compelling.

.

WE

we

we

we people. we see the world of 7ish-billion other people.

bustling. brimming. boundless.

.

but when we find ourselves in the “bulges of the tempest pealing”….

[also known as - the middle of nowhere]

this world can be a pretty lonely place.

.

and this middle of nowhere is not just a physical place,

but also,

quite simply

a state of mind

.
